Hey Jason, yes purchasing miles should reset the expiration date on your AA miles.

Sign them up for the AA dining program and list one of your credit cards under their AA account and eat out at one of the participating restaurants and you are set.. Or donate some miles to charity in their name from their account.. Min $25 donation I think

According to AwardWallet, the 18 month activity requirement doesn’t apply to Aadvantage members under the age of 21. I assume that means that children’s points won’t expire until after they turn 21, and only then if they don’t have some kind of activity for 18 months.
